Originally released by [l58017 in 1999.
Track 1. Taken from I Like Walt (7" compilation, Walt). Recorded live at KSPC Claremont one early summer afternoon.
Track 2. Taken from [r=794763 (cassette compilation, [l53365)
Track 3. Taken from Howl...A Farewell Compilation Of Unreleased Songs (CD compilation, Glitterhouse / Zuma, Germany)
Tracks 4 to 13. Taken from [r=2855301 (10-song cassette, [l83899). Written and recorded over the course of one week and released as-is.
Track 14. Taken form [r=1040882 (cassette compilation, [l21702, Sweden). Recorded live at the Tokyo Rose in Charlottesville VA, 9/2/996.
Track 15. Taken from [r=1849069 (7" compilation, [l61886)
Tracks 16 to 20. Taken from [r=1882103 (5-song 7", [l31508). This was the first single, and it sported [a sleeve by Ian Smith's Juggernaut Press. Its back featured a quotation from Nero and another, unattributed, from Turnbull's "The Mountain People".
Track 21. Taken from [r=1567343 (7" compilation, Pottery). This was to have been the first song for a post-Mountain Goats band called the Orange Trees, which would have eschewed home recording entirely and made slick little pop songs.
Track 22. Taken from Dog So Large I Cannot See Past It (CD compilation, WPRB)
Track 23. Taken from [r=1706920 (7" compilation, [l145656)
Tracks 24 to 27. Taken from 334389 (4-song 7", [l54124, Germany). It was supposed to be called "Sons For Peter Hughes". Pressed in a limited edition of 600, the first hundred or so on red vinyl. The fade-out at the end of Track 25 was the idea of the nameless Czech engineer who, hearing the way we'd run out of tape while recording the song, couldn't deal with it and so muscled his way anonymously into history.
Thanks to the usual suspects, though I'd like to remember especially the people who initially released these difficult songs: [a367972, of course, and Gregor and Herwig; Jeff Smith, [a75399 and WPRB, and [a5667024; [a1617051 and all our friends in Sweden; Dan and Danielle Varenka; Jon Nall; and [a297499, whose early intercession is the *only* reason that any of this ever saw the light of day.

The Mountain Goats have always wanted to give out free plugs whose good, fair business practices—oases of goodness in a weary world filled with faceless corporate monoliths—warrant it, but have always let aesthetic considerations get in their way until now.
The Mountain Goats use and endorse the third person plural and will do so until the cows come home.
The Mountain Goats persist in the belief that eventually the cows will in fact come home, and that they'll stay home once they get there.
